Our guild receives the handmade dolls from the Dan River Baptist Association in Halifax, VA. The Samantha Doll Ministry began in Adaville Baptist Church, Spindale, NC on May 17, 1998. Samantha was a little girl dying of cancer. The name was chosen by the Baptist Women in memory of her, the grandchild of Rev. and Mrs. James Davis.
The purpose of the dolls is to bring comfort of God’s love to children with life threatening illnesses. Each doll has the words “Jesus Loves You” written on the chest. They also come with name tags – they are usually names to honor or in memory of someone special to the maker of the doll.
When our members get the dolls, they make a quilt for the doll – approximately 18″ x 24″ and then a quilt for the recipient – approximately 36″ x 45″.
Our area hospices give them to terminally ill children, children of patients and to patients with dementia. They bring great comfort to all who receive them. Our guild have given out approximately 40 dolls to date.
